Meditation retreat and travel to ancient Buddhist sites in India
summer 2010

Register your interest early so we can plan dates etc

'A great way to retreat, a great way to travel.'

elloraajanta

A small group of us will be travelling to India in teh summer of 2010 for meditation retreat and travel. You are welcome to join us. The earlier you register your interest, the better - so we can plan the trip. Our itinerary currently includes the Ellora and Ajanta caves, Sarnath and Bodhgaya. Our exact route may change according to the interests and meditation needs of the group.

ellora

The Ellora and Ajanta caves north-east of Mumbai were carved out of the living rock between approximately 2nd century BCE (Ajanta), 5th century CE (Ellora) until 7th century CE. In the prolific and inspiring viharas, shrine rooms and carvings we can see the development of Mahayana buddhist imagery, eg early forms of Green Tara inspired by Hindu tantric styles. At Sarnath, with its many temples and stupas old and new, is the Deer Park where Shakyamuni buddha first taught. We will stay within a short walk of the Deer Park. The wonderful shrine room of the Vajra Vidya monastery is below:

We will stay at each place long enough both to explore some wonderful parts of Buddhist India and to maintain our meditation retreat. We will visit Varanasi for walks along the amazing Ghats by the Ganges, including the cremation Ghats and evening fire puja ceremony.
