atmarupa harmonium, shakers, vocals
Throughout primary school I sang a solo in the local town
hall as part of the end of year school concert. For most of my life
that was just a funny memory that I occasionally laughed about until
by the grace of a particular yogini, I was introduced to devotional
singing – kirtan - and the use of sound as a harmonizing and healing
force.
This, along with yoga and meditation, initiated a process of change
in life that continues today.
A few years later I returned from a trip to India with harmonium and
the realization that I had always wanted to express myself with song!
Finding a way to do this that also connected with deep spiritual
aspirations nurtured an ongoing
process of self discovery.
In the year 2000, I was initiated into
the path of yoga by my teacher, Swami Niranjan, and after attending
many retreats and classes based on sound - Nad yoga - singing mantras
became part of daily life.
After undertaking training as a teacher
of Satyananda Yoga, I was unable to resist taking the harmonium to
yoga class. I joined Spirit in April of 2007, excited about finding
another way to share the experience of devotional singing with
others.
I now realize that singing allows us to get in touch with who we
really are and to realize that potential.
