peela keyboards, harmonium, vocals
As a child growing up in Sydney, I went to a private school that was strongly musical, and I was a member of the choir, as well as learning classical piano and musicianship within the school. Those were the things that made school bearable for me, and the choir in particular was worth every early morning and after school practice!
I became interested in yoga and meditation in my teens, and became an Osho sannyasin when I was 18, and came to live in Perth. It wasn't until I was in my late 20s, with 2 small children, after Osho had died, that I became involved with ShantiMayi's community and started singing bhajans. Mohini and another friend Shakti and I used to get together weekly for a women's circle and sing, and I learned to play the harmonium, and then we would play with ShantiMayi. It has always been so uplifting and amazing to sing and play in ShantiMayi's presence. The meanings of the bhajans have really come alive for me.
Then I was invited to come and join the new band that has become Spirit, and I have been constantly pushed to the edge of my musical ability, and I have grown so much in this time. I love being a part of this dynamic band, singing for joy and sharing that joy with others. It is a blessing in my life, and I wish that it may it be a blessing for others too.
